The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.
