Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
